Wedge weave is an eclectic and rare and even more so misunderstood of traditional Navajo weaving. The technique is deeply imbedded in the Twined blankets of the Northwest Coast weavers as is pre Columbian indigenous weavers of Peru and basket weavers all over the Historic Southwest, and is experiencing a revival among the Navajo.
1st documented in the early 1880s the technique all but fell out of favor by the 1900s as traders deemed the rare style and wavy sides a defect instead of a unique trait of the weaving. Woven in bias with the warp the angles can be shallow as 5˚ to an extreme 45˚. The effects on the sides more pronounced with higher angles.
One clear advantage for this style is the way it is quickly woven while minimizing the movement of the weaver.
